what about you? are you the one family members come to for all things mending and sewing? in my family, it's me. this is the current family fix-it....jacket zipper.
for anyone else i'd say no. retrofitting commercial garment sewing is not for the faint of heart or even us with repaired hearts. Zipper in and works but safe to say, land's end won't be offering me a job anytime soon.
more wednesday wedding sewing coming up....goal is to have a top to baste come new year's...more blue/cheddar 9-patches made.
A neighborly santa left this for me....

"Asking a quilter to mend is like asking PIcasso to paint your garage." And, yes, alterations are a special skill. Good for you to get back to those sewing roots! Your Frosty is still charming -- and he's well-traveled. It's such fun to see people's traditional decorations put out each year.
ReplyDeleteKudos to you, replacing a zipper is major sewing surgery. I love your little Frosty.
ReplyDeleteOh, I feel your pain, Grace. I have been the go-to mender for hubby, my sons, my oldest daughter (once her MS made mending out of her reach) and when my Mom no longer sewed, I did her mending, and my brother's (since Mom had always done it for him). Not my favorite way to use needle and thread, but grateful I can help out when someone has a real need. However, I don't know if I would have been as brave as you were to tackle that zipper. And I did draw the line with my son when he recently brought me a pair of jeans I have already patched twice. I told him that when I am sewing patches on previous patches that were sewn onto prior patches, it is time to get a new pair, even if they are your favorites. :)
ReplyDeleteYou are a better woman than me to tackle replacing that zipper. I even hesitate at mending the knees in Mick’s work duds. Your little Frosty is very cute. Isn’t it nice to have special decorations that have been with us a long time. It sounds like you have really embraced the Christmas spirit.
ReplyDeleteI was asked if I could mend a zipper in a coat ..... no, sorry .... not anymore. It was my sister, and I still said 'no'. Those days are gone by now. My niece was wondering if I would be willing and able to make two flower girl dresses and I also said 'no' to that as well. Must say, it is getting easier to say that word these days. I did alterations on a bridesmaids dress this past summer and I was a total wreck. So nervous about messing it up. The other bridesmaids dresses had straps pop off and their bodice fell open, whereas my alterations worked and there was no embarrassment for my niece! That made me feel good in the end. Your Frosty is sweet and adds to the Xmas decor.
ReplyDeleteI dislike clothing repairs........I persist with limited ones of mine.......zipper in a coat you are an angel.......nice books lucky you.......
