Away we go!

off to a running start with a new challenge from my Zoom peeps....

already in with corinne et cecile's sew along but this challenge is a bit different....choose 10 projects to work on, start, move forward etc.  pretty sure i can come up with 10 (jan-oct) that fit the criteria.

1.  Tame the wild scrap basket.....

2.  make something out of the solids drawer....have various precut sizes and they have reached jam packed stage, so it's time

3.  finish up the selvedge strips.  little container half full (or half empty) and won't take much time to use up the rest sewing up squares for potholders

4.  clear out the 2" strip shoebox by making more of bonnie hunter's scrap 4 blocks.   there should be enough for a flimsy when done

5.  start a new wall quilt 'blue plate special'....was gifted several blue scraps and a plan is formulated

6.  finish prepping circles for my dutch chintz tree of life wall quilt...this project needs to move forward as much as it can

7.  prep/baste appliques for my penn dutch wall quilt; it's a 2024 UFO and doubt it will get done this year, but would like to move this project along

8.  make 2 more project bags (see below); vinyl, zippers, fabric and batting all on hand

9.  dargate baskets applique...don't think i can get them all done this year, but needs to move forward

10.  tidy the stash shelves...a one-day project that will go a long way to assessing what's on hand and corral wanderers

the challenge requires me to post my progress for accountability and will be transparent.  have tried to choose do-able things that won't interfere with my C&C blocks or my UFO progress.  now that my health situation is pretty much maintenance mode, frees up more time for sewing fun.  i feel blessed to have such a hobby that is so enriching and enjoyable and a community of like-minded sewists.

Last post of 2023

Shazam!  just like that another year has passed like lightning....and the first word that comes immediately to mind is thankfulness. A few notables made my year happier, better, more enjoyable....i'll toss in a few finish photos for diversion...lol!  but at the forefront, i thank my God always for constant care, love and guidance.  He did some awesome things for me this year, not always noteworthy, but always an expression of His deep love.  This was evident not just in my life, but family members too.

my family--all of them!  a special mention of my dear sister-in-law who came to my aid after leg surgery, discharge one day and moving 4 days later!  it was an adventure, wasn't it?

all my healthcare providers.  the news wasn't always welcome, but the treatment was...and those home care RNs and PTs who got me back on my feet...unsung heroes indeed!

the folks at my wonderful new place....staff, neighbors, others who guided a newbie in town, and my new church family who welcomed me and found a place for me to worship and fellowship.  i haven't completely bonded but feeling more at home every day...it is so very difficult to move and establish all new connections.

have to include my online and in person quilty peeps, some i've known thru several moves!  the gals from 'down under', the stashbusters, the senior center gals....all have enriched my creative life by several notches.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2024!

up for air

i've been at the machine nearly nonstop the past few days sewing stuff....miss sunny had to be oiled TWICE and needle changed the same.  she was delighted to be of regular use...assembled more of bonnie hunter's scrap block; more are sewn ready for assembling.  astonishingly quick and easy!

deep in the desk under some stuff, found yet another UFO.  haven't decided if this will be a flimsy to donate or something for me to quilt.  i do like repro quilts a lot and this would be easy to hand quilt....food for thought. i think that gives me 23 for 2024...sheesh, i thought my list would be smaller!

finally all wedding quilt blocks are done and ready to lay out and assemble.  thinking will utilize a meeting room at the library where there's plenty of flat and walking around space.

have cleared the decks somewhat ...few more blocks to have a flimsy but laundry and dishes have been waiting too long already.  friday is gym day and a few errands, then i'll be back sewing.  the week has flown by and new year just around the corner....hardly seems possible.  ***  tree and decorations will remain another week or so before reluctantly relegated to wait another christmas.   maybe it won't be 50 degrees then...LOL!

A Blessed Christmas!

'Twas the day of christmas and all thru the house,
no seniors were stirring, no sign of a mouse.

The stockings were hung, the tree brightly lit.
Grace was missing her family, much more than a bit.

The scraps were all piled in an orderly mess,
And Grace was in jammies, her usual dress

at the vintage machine, her usual place,
and blocks being sewn, threads all over the place!

A plan was in place for a sewing-filled day,
making some quilt tops to then give away.

A pizza for lunch that must be home made,
to keep down the salt and no check to be paid.

But the meaning of Christmas was clearly in mind,
as she sewed the bright fabrics from quilters so kind.

It isn’t the gifts, or turkey or ham,
but the greatest of gifts that was long ago planned.

A babe in a manger, very far from here,
and angels with news of clearly good cheer.

So when Christmas is done and tops neatly made,
life will go on in the usual way.

But the best gift remains, unselfishly given,
of a Savior who came and the promise of heaven!

Christmas somewhere

woodstock flying in to say a very merry christmas to my quilty peeps in the southern hemisphere!

gearing up....

for scrappy week sewing starting christmas day!  but first, gotta move the wedding quilt forward.  friday nite and today (sat) resolved to finish all blocks....i think i can, i think i can!

doesn't look like much but stay tuned!  and while hunting around for an unfinished cross stitch item, not seen since the move, found this....

another UFO!  arrrrrrgh!  even woodstock is horrified....lol!  muslin pieces all cut, plenty of repro scraps on hand so gets added to the 2024 list, making total of 22 so far...hope no others are lurking in the deepest corners anywhere....and the cross stitch piece?

all that was needed was to stitch the stars and find a backing, now ready to sew up and be put into the display duck.  it's a little bigger than most of the stuffies i make, but it was such a nice pattern....

most of my holiday stuff is done/over.  bathroom even got a serious clean.  i've 3 scrappy projects ready for monday, well i did have 3 until saw this in one of the gifted magazines....a bonnie hunter column/pattern.

a simply little scrappy block using 2" strips....oh yeah, i've got a shoebox full!  why not try a couple of blocks....bonnie, the uber enabler, was right...it is difficult to stop as they are sooo scrappy and sooo quick!  my only consolation is that i have nowhere near the amount of scraps she does....LOL...but plenty to keep me busy all week, now with 4 projects on deck!

off to the gym!

Test drive

the theme for the corinne et cecile sew along is 'animals'....i found this pattern on the internet called 'happy cats' designed by stacey day....pieced block...few pieces...ideal!  so pulled a few scraps for a test block.  the pattern makes a 50x50 quilt but wanted mine smaller....quicker finish you know.  here's the test block...

identified a few tricky areas--those triangle ears for one of course!  block ends up 8 3/8" inches wide and about 10" long.  gotta make 16 of these--fabrics pulled and ready to go when january arrives!  what else?

finished up a few potholders, some for me and some for mum.  busted some batting scraps in the bargain.  great thing is when they get grungy can just toss and make a few more.

wedding quilt sewing is full steam ahead.  on track for top construction early january...

most of my holiday doings over and done.  i'll be celebrating solo, so have the day planned and a list that probably won't all get done, but will start on scrappy sewing week.  if i could assemble 3 scrappy tops, i'll consider it a success.  ***  PT on hiatus until next week but even after 2 visits have seen improvement, so won't be ordering the electric scooter just yet.  *** i'll leave you with a couple of holiday pix; first, spode mug and dish gifted to me 20+ years ago by a roommate when i lived in boston.  always takes me back to working 'in town' and feeling of belonging and quite cosmopolitan...one of the happiest times in my life.  truthfully, i haven't felt at home anywhere since.   second is another of those giveaway CVS ornaments from 1999...24 years ago!  surely they must be worth a mint by now....LOL!

keep calm and soldier on!

Soggy sunday sewing

for those of you who live far away, there are actually two marylands...divided by the west virginia panhandle....the eastern side gets rain and floods, the western side gets the snow.  sunday, for us, was wet and gloomy--outside.  inside, miss sunny sewing machine was whirring...to finish this flimsy.  and with careful cutting, did get all the sashing out of the scrap, now gone.  all but a few strips of the cheddar was used up as well.  next....

these two stitcheries got done a while ago but not finished until yesterday.   the big one, pin cushion size of maryland, is a gift.  the other goes in my display duck with other stuffies.

our senior center quilty group had their little party friday and gifts were swapped.  i got this terrific item, a kitchen buddy!  hangs over the neck with towels on either end for handy hand wiping...plus a joann gift card that'll go for batting/backing for the wedding quilt and a few needed notions.  some of my pins were sacrificed fixing the jacket.

also sunday a major frankenbatt session for the 'advent sky' top.  took several small pieces but mission accomplished AND they are gone from the stash.  pulled this piece for the back and it's just the right size--another piece gone and now it can get basted.  it's a 2024 UFO.

joined up with corinne et cecile for their annual sew along, starting january.  it's only 16 blocks--i've participated before--so pulled fabrics for that sunday as well.  shaping up to be a busy winter, especially squeezing in 6 weeks of PT that has already garnered improvement in mobility.  now that most holidays events over, can turn my attention to some needed house chores.  as anticipated, i'll be home by myself on Christmas so i've got a plan for the day that doesn't include cleaning...or laundry...and it might even be a pajama day too....LOL!

Ready or not!

a few surprises this week....a gift of fresh balsam from maine; battery candle ok for the apartment....love it!

the use-it-up project is coming along....i did have a few strips of the cheddar left, not enough for binding i'm afraid.  the sashing is another scrap and fingers crossed i've enough for all.  if not, pretty sure i've something that'll work.  that's the downside of working with scraps, often hard to calculate if there's enough, for me anyway.

a neighbor gifted me this stack of old quilt magazines....pure gold!  thumbed through a few and found more project ideas....like who wouldn't?  a dangerous, delightful gift!

a couple of recent flingee boxes of fabric came my way.....always fun to play with somebody else's fabric!

perked up my days several notches i can tell you.  sending huge thanks to these very generous quilters for blessing me so generously.  my budget has no room for fabric but no need with fabric angels like these.  no doubt what i'll be doing over the holidays!

few holiday happenings here at the complex that allow for cheerful gatherings with other residents, new and old.  i did meet another quilter who moved in recently.

another round of PT on the calendar that'll keep me busy thru january--when i'm not sewing that is!

as you can see, blogger being obstinate again despite my repeated attempts to align the text to the left.  i don't know how to reveal formatting codes so just have to go with it.

Holiday stuff

i'm supposed to be at a church concert tonite but the weather is totally miserable--heavy rain and wind--plus it's dark so opted to remain at home and enjoy online concerts--there are plenty!  i did manage to clip some of this before rain arrived....

it's bye bye bittersweet and hello holly!  it grows like wildfire here; i've seen tall trees of the stuff....not in new england tho, so i had to have a bit to gussy up the kitchen...all my holiday hanging stuff is up and out came ornies and tree....

more ornaments to place in the back but already it's quite full...and hey, do you have a CVS santa ornament?  CVS gave out yearly ornaments for a few years back in the 1980s or 1990s..have a few others....such warm memories of people and places resurrected for a bit.

doing some secret sewing that has to remain under wraps for now, but also working on the blue/cheddar blocks in between holiday stuff and usual must dos....

you can just see the edge of the red/green trip around the world finished this year...

here's another lovely cross stitch card received while i lived in frederick from a fellow quilter....she does such beautiful work!

a local church came to our complex today with lunch, music, advent encouragement and a lovely gift.  totally blessed by their generosity.  and as if they knew, some of the food had NO SALT....a divine gift for sure!
