indeed...just one day away....so you know the holidays and a new year are not that far off....no problem, i'll take a new year gladly, how about you? have kept busy trying to ignore the antics in the periphery....the ocean waves is coming along very nicely indeed....briefly debated about not quilting each triangle but happily abandoned different options...will be comfy for fall and early winter quilting....

drought over...
the quilting drought that is....last night sat and relaxed with hoop and needle to work on the latest project...didn't get a whole lot done but was definitely in my happy place...
then first thing this morning, set up phoebe (featherweight) to attach the little orange peel blocks to the center of "midnight at the oasis"....oooh i am loving this! the next border is wider and applique...this is a jen kingwell pattern.
wednesday was super busy getting groceries, medical appointment etc but had to sneak in a brief morning nap....vacation is hard work...LOL! **** and just because i am a commoner doesn't mean i can't breakfast like royalty...
'tis the queen's own favorite marmalade....there's the royal warrant smack dab in the middle...my daughter, the downton abbey devotee and now uber-anglophile, gifted me this along with a jar of lemon curd from the british food depot. it's tangy and only a tad sweet and yummy of course. trust her majesty to find the best!Sunday, September 20, 2020
vacation wrapup
it's been summer to fall and soon back to summer after arrival in maryland later this week...33 chilly degrees here in midcoast maine this morning but the air is crisp and autumnal evoking pumpkins, apples, cider and eruption of foliage color...we enjoyed the absolute best september/late summer weather at the beach....last thursday was 75, warm, hint of breeze and spent nearly the entire day lounging in the sand....lobster rolls for lunch of course! my lazy needlework slowly progressed, first with the applique block...
and then some cross stitch that gets pulled out now and then....a short mealtime prayer i heard long ago and then found this sampler....
friday we visited our favorite seafood shack for one last yummy shellfish treat....
ordering to go as it was too cool to dine al fresco...fried clams for me and fried scallops for mum....aside from the clams and one hot dog, kept very close to the cardiac diet with fresh seafood and chicken...saturday morning packed up and back to mum's until departure....one last family dinner to bask in close ties only family provides...leaving with mixed emotions as always....but of course, in my mind i'll always be here...

northern exposure
posts will be mostly suspended as this quilter has returned temporarily to yankee territory....boring photos and travelogue to follow at some point...applique projects on board and wool sox at hand with, of course, plenty of lobster on the menu....end of a difficult week with brief hospital visit and some disheartening cardiac news, medication adjustments and another "new normal" status...overwhelmingly thankful for superior caregivers at all levels and God's continued care and comfort.

corona-cation, episode 48
if you follow this blog, this piece will be familiar....the new england sampler. waiting on thread for the next hand quilting project, so spending time trying to get this to a flimsy....it's one of my very oldest UFOs and needs to be done.
this will be the last post titled 'corona-cation' because, let's face it, it's no vacation. it is the way of life now for the foreseeable future. it stinks, but there you have it. heard this week that the church where our quilt group meets is now off limits until at least february....nasty face masks are part of the wardrobe and endless testing reports are just plain boring. my plans for the fall are practically none....except continue with my exercise regime and hack away at UFOs. i do hope to take a few day trips around the area for a change of scenery. if things worsen, well, there's always zoloft....now that alcohol is off limits...LOL!

corona-cation, episode 47
end of august and in new england, it's the unofficial end of summer but not here in maryland...another month to go....plenty of warm days yet to sew! and another finish....rustic stars...
small quilt at 36" square but colorful and just right for somebody's country home....a friend had sent me a large baggie of plaid scraps and with some of my own, it was a cinch! i think this makes finish #10 so far this year.Sunday, August 23, 2020
corona-cation, episode 46
august plods along with hot muggies returning again this week. due to vision problems, lost nearly a week working toward my august goals hoping now to make up for lost time. no oven or stove use led to some funky food combos...LOL...finally yesterday able to drive and had a birthday lunch with my two favorite people....and prezzies too!
plenty of viewing diversion from the motherland and some delish tiptree lemon curd...her majesty favors their orange marmalade...plus a quartet of anglo-theme fridge magnets.....and earlier in the week this squishie arrived from an online quilty pal...
a beautiful applique pattern has been chosen but holding off until august's list is conquered... birthday lunch was the once-yearly prime rib that was heavily seasoned, immediately noticeable when one lives nearly sodium free, but decadently good followed by a 50s favorite of root beer floats...alas, had to return to the "abbey" (definitely NOT downton) hoping it is a temporary situation. *** still a bit draggy and unsteady today so fitness still on hold, but at least i can sew. snacks at the ready in the form of no-salt peach salsa, a poor but tolerable sub for chips and dip...and yeah, i know, healthier too...
today's mantra is to keep calm and sew on!

corona-cation, episode 45
this is not a quilty post....no photos are posted either....
when i began my search for housing in maryland nearer my daughter, my only child, i applied to several housing locations. after a year i was contacted by CSI...i was in maine and received contact i was at the top of the list. i asked if i could wait a week or two to come for an interview...next thing i knew, a woman named felicia martin contacted me and told me i had "refused" the apartment, that she tried to contact my POA and got no response...clearly she had the wrong applicant. no apology received and housing opportunity lost. next i received another call from the same company demanding i come to maryland for a interview. i took time off work, shelled out $300 for train and rental car for the day. again i was told i was at the top of the list, but at the interview i found i was "near" the top of the list, a blatant lie obviously. a wasted, expensive trip. third time (not a charm) another interview was demanded, again i was lied to about being at the top of the list, again spending over $300 for travel and another useless interview. i crossed this company off my list. i continued homeless and kept in contact with several other possible apartments, all aware of my situation and my place on their lists. then i received a call from claudia and mary sue at taney village in frederick. HUD had given this complex an excellent review and the location was good. claudia and mary sue promised me this was a no smoking complex, written in the lease, which it is. they failed to tell me, however, that it is largely ignored and not enforced. i didn't realize it until i drove 500 miles and arranged a moving van for my belongings. finally the end of the waiting was in sight. only when i arrived did i realize about the smoking. i was told it was residual odor from previous tenant....more lies. i slept on the floor for 2 weeks waiting for my furniture. just before the moving van arrived, a call came from my first choice but it was too late. i had signed the lease at taney village, much to my extreme regret.
in the 4+ years, i have complained heartily to management, to the parent company, to county offices, fire department, health department, obtained letters from my physicians imploring cessation of the smoking, not just for my health but that of many others. there are many here who are sedentary, on oxygen, debilitated and immobile, situations all made worse by second-hand smoke. nobody of authority cares a whit. the smokers continue to do as they please knowing full well there is nobody after hours or weekends to stop them. during this pandemic there are signs everywhere from enterprise residential stating how much they care about their tenants....this is pure fiction.
the smoking has continued and includes not only cigarettes but other substances, all of which are detrimental to everyone's health. since my surgery, i have atrial fibrillation and some of these smoked substances cause my heartbeat to race, which is of great concern to me. every week for 1-2 days i am sidelined because these behaviors affect my health negatively. i hate these people--all of them. i hate this complex, not because it isn't fancy or chic but because many of the people who live here do as they please and care nothing about anyone else in the building. some idiot fries fish at ungodly hours, and the smoke filters thru to my apartment. that's because the blueprint for the vent system was copied directly from steerage on the titanic....the manager and head maintenance have been here many years and look the other way frequently. in fact, the head of maintenance actually LIVES in the building...not sure why as nobody is allowed to contact off hours....they and the long-term tenants have a perceived, unspoken, mutual understanding that doesn't include enforcement of lease rules for all. all their kind words are pure lip service, nothing more. i have worked very hard since my cardiac surgery to completely recover. i haven't been able to attend the fitness center since tuesday because i have been ill due to selfish behaviors of the low life riff raff morons who care only for the freedom to light up when they please with full knowledge there will be no repercussions. i am convinced the property managers all attend the same sado-masochistic training academy and learn how to drive the tenants to an early grave.
if you are a taxpayer, this is where some of your tax dollars go....supporting low income housing that contributes to the demise of its residents. for two years now my name has been on other housing lists that also promise no smoking facilities...it's a HUD law now, but even HUD does nothing but post signs on the property....signs the smokers hang around to smoke on the property. the smokers are mad because they think they have rights...what they do not have is the right to impact my health with their nasty butts....i am not the smoking police...feel free to smoke if you like, but why does your choice to smoke obliterate MY choice not to or be around the smoking? smokers have the right to smoke everywhere that it isn't prohibited, which it is here....period. you just haven't grown up to realize that means YOU! and unfortunately the mother superior of this abbey for the aged prefers not to do her job.
